I'm starting to look more like a real mommy-to-be. The bump is probably 50% baby and 50% bloat. Please excuse the bathrobe and the Butterfinger bars.

No rest for the weary.

I was denied a vacation day or sick day at my full-time job, and I have tons of work to do on my part-time teaching gig. I'm never going to get caught up now. And to make matters worse, I feel like I'm coming down with a sinus infection or something. But onward I must forge. I'll be grading papers all weekend, which in fact, makes the weekend not a weekend anymore.

At least I have a couple of things to look forward to. On Monday night, Joey and I are going to see David Sedaris, one of my favorite authors. He's speaking at SMU. I hope my laughing doesn't disturb Cherrio too much! Then on Tuesday night, we're going to the Dallas Mavericks playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs. This will be Cheerio's first sporting event, and I fully intend to show him/her how evil those Spurs are!

Week 15, already!

Weight: 131 lbs.
Symptoms: gas, bloating, indigestion, fatigue, intermittent abdominal pains
Listening to: Lady Gaga The Fame Monster
Watching on TV: American Idol: Idol Gives Back

Because I found out so early on that I was pregnant (I was only a little over 3 weeks along), the first trimester seemed like it lasted for decades. Now that I'm in the second week of my second trimester, I can't believe how quickly the days are rushing past me.

I've got a visible baby bump now. Joey has been taking my picture almost every week since the beginning, and I hope to upload those pictures here soon.

My appetite is finally coming around. I thought I'd never get over that Easter stomach bug, but now food is a big priority for me. I still have those pesky food aversions, but at least my nose isn't as sensitive as it was in the first trimester. No more constant extreme nausea for me (although I do get a wave of it every now and again).

What are my cravings right now? I am addicted to Clementine mandarin oranges, cereal with whole milk, and COLD water (before pregnancy, I preferred only lukewarm water.) I'm also loving me some salmon and some tuna salad sandwiches, although I can have these items only twice a week because of their mercury levels. I'm still turned off by shrimp and spicy foods such as Indian, Mexican, and Asian cuisines, which is a bummer because those are perennial favorites of mine.

Catching up is hard to do.

Up until now, I've been writing my thoughts in a Word doc and copying and pasting them here. I had been waiting until a clever blog title came to me. I'm still waiting.

Anyhow, the previous posts may seem pithy and unemotional, and if you know me in real life, you know I am neither of those. My goal up to now was to take note of only the most important thoughts and details, the "meat and potatoes," if you will. Now that I am here and caught up on all the copying and pasting, I can kick back and write whatever strikes me, whenever I want.

The bottom line? My future posts will be more intricate and intimate. I hope.

Week 14: Thursday, April 15, 2010

Symptoms: food aversions, gas, bloating, fatigue

On Monday, at the end of my 13th week, I went for a regular OB visit. All went well. I heard our Cheerio's heartbeat again, which is always a thrill! The doctor said that my second 24-hour urine test came back normal, so I can stop worrying about my kidney function. Whew!

He also told me to stop bothering to measure my waist. That's fine with me because, honestly, I don't know how to do it correctly anyway.

Week 13: Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Weight: 132 pounds
Symptoms: gas, bloating, indigestion, bleeding gums, acne (mainly on forehead), food aversions

Well, I didn’t vomit at all until week 12, and even that wasn’t attributed to morning sickness. At the very end of my first trimester, I came down with a nasty stomach virus. It started on Easter night, and it lasted for about 3 days. I had to take the whole week off from work to recuperate. To make matters worse, Joey was out of town for the worst part of it (he was helping his dad, who had knee-replacement surgery), and I couldn’t really take care of myself. I lost some weight, but I seem to have gained it back in a hurry!

So now I’m officially in my second trimester. I’m just starting to show a tiny bit. I’ve bought some maternity pants (too big, though), and some maternity shirts. Oh, and a Belly Band waist expander and a couple of Bella Bands.

Food aversions are still a problem, but I think the extreme sensitivity to smell is starting to ease up a bit. I’m really surprised I didn’t have one bout of real morning sickness at all. I did, however, have frighteningly bad diarrhea, so I wasn’t completely off the hook.

I just turned 35 two days ago. This will be the best year yet, I’m sure.

My 35th birthday! I did a whole lot of nothing today, which was a refreshing way to celebrate this milestone. Joey took me shopping for maternity clothes, and we had a nice dinner at Fish City Grill.
In this photo, I'd say the bump is 80% bloat, 15% baby, and 5% other.

No real baby bump just yet. I'm still just bloated. As you might be able to see, the hormones are wreaking havoc on my already-bad skin.
