We went to a maternal-fetal specialist today to get the baby’s nuchal transparency screening done to check for risks of Down syndrome. This was a level II ultrasound that was more detailed and longer than a regular ultrasound. We got to hear the heartbeat (Joey was there for this one); the heart rate was 169, I think. And we got to see our little Cheerio floating around in the sac! The doctor got some great pictures, and he even made a guess about the gender: It might be a…GIRL! It’s way too early to know for sure, so we’ll see what happens in a few weeks. Anyway, the measurements of the NT scan look good (below 2, the doctor said), and we’ll know about the results of the genetic screening blood tests in about a week. I’ll have to go back in 6 weeks for additional screenings.

Also, the other day, we bought our first item for Cheerio: a teddy bear from Build-A-Bear. We didn’t dress it or anything; it’s just a plain ole cute bear that she (or he) will hopefully love in the coming years. It made me a little teary-eyed, I must admit. I wanted our first purchase for the baby to be something special and meaningful, so it was a success!

Week 11: Thursday, March 25, 2010

Weight: 132 pounds
Symptoms: sensitivity to smells, cravings, fatigue, gas, bloating, nausea

I heard our little Cheerio’s heartbeat today for the first time! It was during a routine doctor’s appointment, but Joey wasn’t there to hear it. But it was surreal—I couldn’t do anything but grin a huge grin. In fact, I’m grinning that same grin now. However, my doctor has some concerns about my kidney function, so he’s having me redo the 24-hour urine test this weekend. Last time, my creatinine clearance level was very low. So we’ll see what happens when I go back to the doctor in a couple of weeks.

Photo: week 10

This photo is underexposed--sorry. It looks like I'm starting to show a little bit, but that tiny bump is all bloat and no baby.

Week 10: Saturday, March 20, 2010

Waist: 31.5 inches
Weight: 129 pounds
Symptoms: sensitivity to smells, cravings, fatigue, gas, bloating, nausea

I didn’t realize I hadn’t written anything during week 9! Oh well, it was really just a continuation of week 8. Nothing exciting or different. This week, however, it seems that my breast soreness is getting a little better. Also, my sensitivity to smells doesn’t seem as acute, but it’s still bothersome. Right now, the most uncomfortable symptom I have is bloating. I had to order some waist expanders for my prepregnancy jeans so that I can continue to wear these jeans a bit longer. I’m not showing yet, but my bloated tummy gives a false impression. And my slowly increasing appetite isn’t helping any!

Symptoms: extreme sensitivity to smells, cravings, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, breast soreness

Eating is a chore. I find, however, that eating seems to keep the nausea at bay. In fact, the type of nausea I feel is the type you get after you take vitamins on an empty stomach. I haven’t vomited yet, but I’ve come close several times. Diarrhea seems to be the most bothersome GI symptom these days. Other than this, not too much is happening right now. I’m not showing yet, but I sure am bloated.

Week 8: Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Symptoms: extreme sensitivity to smells, cravings, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, breast soreness

The follow-up ultrasound showed a full-fledged fetus with a heartbeat! The heart rate was 174. There was a visible head as well as arm and leg buds. I cried!
